| 213 | (Research):Han hade ungefär 20 barn, enligt Tibor Karfunkel. Tibor tror han är född runt 1844 i Napkor. Tibor kallade honom: Juchil Jechil, Yechiel Mechl Karfunkel och Mikhael Karfunkel. Rav Chaim Halberstam of Sanz, author of Divrei Chaim (1794-1876), founder of the Sanzer Chasidim. Born in Tarnograd, Poland, he became a close talmid of Rav Naftali Tzvi of Ropshitz. His first position was Rav of the small town of Rudnick, before he became Rav of Sanz (Tzanz), where he stayed for 46 years. The most prominent of his 12 children was Rav Yechezkel of Shinov. The current leader of the Bobover chasidim, who now resides in Brooklyn is a descendant of Ravi Chaim. Another scion of Sanz, Rav Yekutiel Yehudah Halberstam, the Klausenburger Rav, has erected several towns, yeshivos, and a modern medical center in Israel, as well as yeshivos in New Jersey and New York. the Divrei Chaim of Sanz Yahrtzeit of Rabbi Yosef Baruch Halevi Epstein, son of the "Ma'or Vashemesh" of Krakow, who was affectionately called the "Gutter Yid" of Neustat by the Sanzer Rebbe, the "Divrei Chaim". B. Wolff 19/04/2009 10:00 Sanz was a small town on the border of Galicia, next to Krakow. But despite being a small, anonymous town '96 its name got famous worldwide in the merit of the great Tzaddik who lived within its borders and established his Chassidic Court there: The Sanzer Chassidus. The Sanz dynasty eventually became one of the largest Chassidic Courts in the world. Rabbi Chaim, the Sanzer Rebbe, lead his flock for forty six years in this town, and after his passing, his Chassidim left Sanz and established the Sanzer Court elsewhere. Rabbi Chaim Halberstam was born in the city of Taringrad to his father, Rabbi Aryeh Leibush Halberstam. From his early childhood, Rabbi Chaim was a fragile child, who often suffered from various illnesses. Once he exclaimed that the constant pain he was feeling was actually a great Segulah for diligent Torah learning, as the saying goes: "He who feels ill should learn Torah." As a child he learned under the Tarnigrader Rav, Rabbi Moshe Yehoshua Heshel Ornstein. Rabbi Chaim would later say that it was from this Rabbi that he obtained the depth of Gemara learning. Rabbi Chaim reached such elevated heights in learning that as a gift for his Bar Mitzvah, his Rav presented him with a rabbinic authorization certificate, and as he put his hands on the lad's head, he exclaimed: "He will lead and he will judge." Rabbi Chaim additionally learned Torah from Rabbi Shmuel Zanvill Heller, also referred to as the "Divrei Shmuel", who was the head of the rabbinic court in Premishlan, as well as from Rabbi Yosef Horowitz, head of the rabbinic court in Tarnigrad. Rabbi Chaim attested that it was from these two great Rabbis that he had absorbed the ideology of Chassidus and it they who had influenced him to travel to the great Chassidic Master, the Seer of Lublin. At the tender age of ten, Rabbi Chaim pleaded with his father to be allowed to travel to Lublin, and after much begging and persuading, his father finally agreed to take him there. From then on, Rabbi Chaim and his father would travel to the Seer of Lublin every year, until the latter's passing. Rabbi Chaim grew up to be an extraordinarily learned and brilliant man. He eventually became known as the "Prodigy of Tarnigrad". As he became of age, he married the daughter of Rabbi Baruch Frenkel Te'omim, the "Baruch Ta'am" of Leipnik. Thereafter, at the age of eighteen, he was appointed Rabbi of Rudnik. In the small community of Rudnik, all respectable men were Chassidim of the Ropshitzer Rebbe. This led to Rabbi Chaim's attraction to Ropshitz, and he began traveling there several times a year. In Ropshitz, Rabbi Chaim became acquainted with Rabbi Meir of Apt, the "Ma'or Shamayim", who said of him: "Of all the prayer leaders that I have heard during my lifetime, Rabbi Chaim is the very best one, as he concentrates on the meaning of the holy Ari on each and every word of the prayers." Rabbi Meir of Apt as well as the Ropshitzer Rebbe, both predicted that Rabbi Chaim would be the leader of the future generation - and so it was. Rabbi Chaim served as Rav of Rudnik for fifteen years, and in 5690 he relocated to Sanz where he established his Chassidic Court. During the 46 years that he led his court in Sanz, it became one of the greatest Chassidic Courts, famous and renowned in all Jewish communities worldwide. In Sanz, the vision of the Ropshitzer Rebbe and Rabbi Meir of Apt was actualized; Rabbi Chaim became the leading figure of his generation. The Sanz dynasty is based on Torah learning. Young boys before their Bar Mitzvah who would come to see the Rebbe and receive his blessing, would be sent back to their homes with the words: "Until the wedding you should concentrate on learning Torah. Only afterward can you start involving yourself in Chassidus and travel to see the Rebbe." The Sanzer Rebbe was famous for his charity giving. Whenever he did not have money to distribute to the poor, he would feel profound sadness and be visibly upset. He refused to go to sleep if he had money in his possession, and would always distribute all the money he had to the poor so as to relieve their suffering. Once, when an argument erupted among his followers in the synagogue, Rabbi Chaim entered and cried out: "I have been told that there is an accusation against me in Heaven because of your arguments, and that my life is in danger. However, I do not fear man and I do not fear the King. Do you know whom I fear? I fear the sighs and the moans of the poor, since every harmful thing eventually goes away, but the groans of the poor can bring harm for generations if we do not extend our hand to help them!" During his last years, Rabbi Chaim's pain and suffering were unbearable and he was extremely weak. In his final year, 5636, he was even more weakened, and he began to prepare his family members for his passing. During his last Passover, he conducted the Seder meal of the first night with all the strength he could muster, but on the second night, he held the festive meal with his immediate family members only, and asked for the women's table to be brought closer to him while saying that the women should also be able to observe how to properly conduct a Seder. On Wednesday, the 25th of Nissan, Rabbi Chaim's pure soul ascended the heavens. He was laid to rest in the local cemetery in Sanz, and his gravesite serves as a prayer-center for countless Jews who seek salvation to this day. Many wondrous stories are told of miracles that had occurred to people after having prayed at the gravesite of this righteous man who is rendered holy by the thousands of Sanzer Chassidim around the world. http://www.tog.co.il/en/Article.aspx?id=97 | Karfunkel, Yechiel Mechl (Mihály) (I110)
